In the early 1800's, Fayetteville
was a stagecoach stop on the Bastrop to San Felipe Trail.
The town was settled in the late 1820's by members of
Stephen F. Austin's Colony. German immigrants (1840's)
were followed by Czechs (1850's) and to this day those
early settlers' culture remains part of the town's history
and heritage.
Today, the
Town Square features business and shops located within
"oldtime" false-front buildings. The 1880's Precinct
Courthouse (with old jail on second floor) along with
the bandstand and benches on the grounds brings to mind
earlier days and times. Of special interest is the Fayetteville
Area Mueseum, home to displays colorfully depicting the
area's unique history and culture from early days to
the present.

Visitors enjoy antiques, collectibles and gift shops on and near
the square. (Shops open midweek and/or weekends.) Cafes
are open convenient hours for just a cup of coffee, a cold
drink, or for complete meals. The City Fire Department,
EMS, K-12 shcools, churches and local businesses provide
needed goods and services to this rural community.
